The
Vineyards
Located
in Burgenland, the sunniest and warmest region of Austria, Sattler
Vineyards maintains an area of 25 acres outside the village
of Tadten. Although a variety of grapes can be found in this
region, the winery is dedicated to mostly two varieties; St.
Laurent and Zweigelt. The village can be found at 120m above
sea level at a latitude of 47.7 degrees and with average annual
rainfall of 450mm. The soil, composed of varied layers, consists
mostly of gravel, a top layer of brown earth and occasionally
sand and clay. For the most part, the number of bunches on a
single vine is reduced to 5 to 7 before harvest. Each grape
bunch is picked by hand and treated with the utmost care. Very
low yields, conscientious pruning and the meticulous selection
of our grapes are the basis for the superior quality of our
wines.
The
Winery
After
harvesting, the black grapes are transported to the winery to
be crushed and de-stemmed. 1000l. and 2000l. open top vats are
used to ferment our "Reserve" wines and temperature-controlled
stainless-steel tanks are used for our other wines. After soft
pressing, the wine goes through malolactic fermentation in oak
barrels. The "classic" Zweigelt and St. Laurent then
stay on the lees for 6 months while the "Reserve"
and "Cuvee" wines in new and used Alier oak barriques
for 12 to 18 months. After fining and minimal filtration, the
wines are bottled and stored for some time. Our objective is
to create variety-typical, dense and smooth wines with harmoniously
integrated tannins, lively fruit and pleasant acidity. White
wines undergo a slightly different process. After the grapes
are picked by hand they stay on the lees in stainless steel
tanks until they become fruity elegant white wines.
